EffectCraft is a free, open-source motion-graphics and compositing tool, written from scratch in Rust with a full motion/compositing workflow. Great for animated titles, MG motion graphics, intros and keying/compositing.
What it lets you do:
- Animate and add effects: bring layers (solids, shapes, text, footage, nested comps) to life with keyframes, stack effects on them, then render.
- Huge built-in effect set: about 306 effects — on par with or exceeding mainstream motion tools — blur, color, distort, generate, key, particle simulation, glow, time, audio, 3D cameras and lights, and so on.
- Expressions + Puppet tools: JavaScript-like expressions for procedural animation, and puppet pins for rigging, hair and cloth follow-through.
- Lottie import/export: send animations straight to the web and apps as Lottie, or import them back for editing.
Product highlights:
- No FFmpeg at all: video/audio codecs are pure Rust and self-written — H.264 and ProRes shared with FilmCraft, plus EffectCraft's own VP9, AV1, HEVC and Opus.
- Readable project files: saved as versioned JSON (.ecproj) that diffs cleanly in Git.
- Everything is a command: the same engine is reachable from the UI, CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server.
- Still young: covers most common features of this class of motion tools, but it can't open certain proprietary project formats or run third-party effect plug-ins yet.
Team & tech: built by the community ArtCraft team (GitHub user storytold, site getartcraft.com); the Craft series is 100% pure Rust with egui and wgpu, an independent open-source work unaffiliated with any third-party commercial software.
Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and a browser (WebAssembly) build.
